Surrender your anxiety!
Be silent and stop your striving,
And you will see that I am God!
I am the God above all the nations,
And I will be exalted throughout the whole earth!
~ Psalm 46:10
There’s an account in Mark 4 of Jesus peacefully sleeping on a cushion in the back of the boat during a violent storm, while His disciples panic, fearing for their lives. After reading this some time ago, I asked the Lord to teach me how to live in that place of calm.
Though we rarely face life-threatening storms, things are uncertain and can feel scary at times. When that happens, it’s reassuring to know that our all-powerful and totally loving God is in control. He knows the end from the beginning, is never surprised, and has all the answers.
The verse above reveals God’s perspective on the storms we face, and offers some sound advice. For example, when we’re anxious and telling God all about it, we’re not quiet and able to listen to His still small voice. We need to surrender, stop striving and listen.
We can be sure that the One who controls it all also knows each of us intimately and loves us unconditionally. He understands our hopes and dreams, our fears and uncertainties. He knows when we’ll face storms in life. He sees them way before we do, and He has solutions for them.
I certainly haven’t learned to be totally calm in life’s storms, but I’m making progress. I’ve also realized that it’s not something you can learn in the quiet, serene waters of life. However I have and am learning that to daily surrender my whole life to God is the best stress solution!
