“A little R&R” used to be a casual, almost flippant reference to taking it easy. But we now know rest and relaxation are essential to good health and well-being. We’re encouraged to ‘stop and smell the roses,’ but who has time? Many of us juggle multiple responsibilities, deadlines and often impossible demands on our time. Technology was supposed to make us more efficient and give us more time to relax, but it hasn’t out worked that way. Instead, our current lifestyle seems designed to produce stress, which we’re warned is linked to all kinds of serious illnesses.
Every living thing needs rest and rejuvenation. In all of nature, there’s a rhythm of work and rest. God designed us to take a day of rest each week. That day wasn’t intended to be a boring day of restrictions, but rather a time to enjoy our Creator, to worship Him, to unwind and relax from the work and stresses of the week. Jesus explained to the Pharisees, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”*
If we’re to keep physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually healthy, we need to include time for rest in our schedules. To make it over the long haul and enjoy the journey, plan and keep a day each week for rest and worship. Most importantly, we need to trust God to give us the strength, energy and resources to accomplish all He wants us to do in the other six days since this has been His plan since the very beginning.
