Last week, I overloaded my schedule. And I hate it when I do that! I’m not sure why I do it-perhaps it’s just easier to say “Yes” to invitations and ideas. There are so many fun and appealing opportunities I want to take advantage of. Plus, I’m often unrealistic about how long it takes to do everything. I know getting enough sleep is important, and I’ve learned that staying up late to finish a project just isn’t productive, because I always pay for it the next day.
We all have a limited number of hours in each day. And if we’ve trusted Jesus as our Savior, then everything we are and own, including our time, really belongs to God. So we need to set appropriate boundaries and keep right priorities. If we don’t, we’ll easily fall prey to the ‘urgent’-reacting to the current demands and circumstances, rather than doing what’s most important.
In his letter to the Ephesians Paul urges his readers, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.*” I pray for myself, and for you too, that we’ll have wisdom to understand and keep God’s priorities each day. Then we can truly make the most of every opportunity.
*Ephesians 5:15-16a, New International Version
